How to Wash and Care for Technical Running Gear (and Make It Last)

Investing in high-performance running gear is a commitment to your training. Between specialised shoes, performance apparel, and premium technical underwear, your kit is built to endure substantial stress. 

When logging heavy miles, your clothing must withstand friction, grit, intense moisture, and constant movement. High-quality performance layers, specifically the foundations worn closest to the skin, are engineered to be resilient on the trail or road.

However, while performance gear can easily survive a standard wash cycle, common laundry habits can quietly degrade its technical features, such as moisture-wicking capabilities and maximum elasticity, over time. 

Proper maintenance of your kit is not about protecting a fragile fabric; it is about ensuring your gear performs at 100% capacity for multiple seasons. Optimising your laundry routine keeps your technical kit performing exactly like it did on day one.

1. The Primary Disruptor: Fabric Softener

If there is one absolute rule for technical running apparel, it is to avoid fabric softener entirely.

Fabric softeners function by depositing a microscopic, waxy chemical coating over the fibers of the fabric to increase perceived smoothness. While acceptable for casual cotton apparel, this compromises technical gear.

This coating obstructs the synthetic pores of moisture-wicking fabrics, neutralising their ability to transport sweat away from the skin. Instead of evaporating, moisture becomes trapped within the textile weave, turning a premium base layer into a heavy, non-breathable layer that can cause severe chafing.

2. Heavy-Duty Construction vs. Basic Laundry Logistics

A common misconception is that premium performance layers must be hand-washed or separated into a dedicated "delicates" cycle. They do not. High-grade running apparel is constructed from high-recovery synthetics built to handle a standard machine wash alongside the rest of your heavy training wardrobe.

That being said, it’s often recommended to wash your performance gear in a mesh laundry bag. But this isn’t about protecting a fragile fabric from the washing machine itself. Instead, it prevents drawstrings from tangling, stops waistbands from stretching around heavier garments like denim, and keeps your technical gear organised so it retains its precise out-of-the-box fit. 

3. Managing Thermal Exposure

Excessive heat is highly damaging to elastane, which is the elastic fibers that provide your gear with stretch and shape retention. When elastane is repeatedly exposed to high temperatures, the synthetic bonds warp. Once this structural degradation occurs, the material loses its memory, resulting in sagging waistbands and loose leg openings that cause the fabric to ride up during movement.

  • The Wash Cycle: Use a cool or cold water setting (30°C or below). Modern detergents are formulated to break down sweat proteins and bacteria effectively without requiring hot water.

  • The Drying Process: Avoid the clothes dryer completely. The intense thermal exposure of a dryer can degrade technical elastic in just a few cycles. Because performance fabrics are inherently engineered to dry rapidly, hanging them up indoors or in the shade is sufficient.

4. Eradicating Persistent Odour

It is common for synthetic running apparel to smell clean immediately out of the wash, only for lingering sweat odours to return the moment the fabric warms up during a run.

Synthetic fibers are hydrophobic (they repel water), which allows them to dry rapidly. However, they are also lipophilic, meaning they naturally attract and retain body oils and bacteria. 

Standard detergents often mask these oils with synthetic fragrances rather than stripping them from the fibers.

The Maintenance Checklist:

  • Avoid Stagnation: Leaving damp, sweat-soaked running gear at the bottom of a dark laundry hamper for days allows bacteria to multiply rapidly. If you are not washing it immediately, hang it up to air dry before placing it in the hamper.

  • Utilise Sports-Specific Detergent: Use a laundry liquid specifically formulated for performance apparel. These formulas contain targeted enzymes that break down the lipids (body oils) and bacteria trapped inside synthetic weaves.

  • The Vinegar Treatment: For older gear with stubborn, lingering odours, add half a cup of white vinegar to the fabric softener compartment of your machine. Vinegar acts as a natural sanitiser that breaks down accumulated oils without damaging the performance fibers.
